Benjamin F. Weaver
Untitled Backyard Sculpting
Artist Statement
My work uses the action of sculpting and the forms that it creates to emphasize the contrast between static forms and motion.

As my career has progressed I have noticed a tendency to reference the process of creation within an individual piece of art as much as possible. I reference the history of the material as well as the history of the process within individual artworks. I am completely engaged in the work while I am producing art, and prefer the experience of creation to the satisfaction of seeing the finished piece.

I utilize a clean technique of form and line. I create strong positive forms that emphasize light, but also use negative forms to soften the overall piece and give greater contrast and motion. I adhere to strict formats of material and dimension which allows the work to be active but also restrained. My recent use of unfinished construction materials emphasizes the subtlety of light, familiarity of material, and the tactile nature of sculpture.

The commonality of material allows the viewer an easy point of reference to the beginning of the process and an understanding of how the process evolves. I show unfinished portions of the work as well subtle hints of glue and hardware used. I believe the familiarity of the material and suggestions of the process helps to maintain a conversation about the art with the viewer so there is greater communication between the viewer and the artist.
