Benjamin F. Weaver
2009 2008 Artist Statement Work in Progress
In my carvings I explore form and structure within a specific format. My latest series explores the subtle abstraction of wood grain through a square. When viewed directly from the front or back the piece reads as a strict square. However, as soon as the viewpoint changes the piece becomes increasingly dynamic. I maintain the authenticity of the material by keeping areas of the wood unfinished. This references the process, and gives contrast to the finished forms.

My next series of work explores the same forms using hammered copper. In this work the subtle forms are easier to view due to the nature of the material. Currently my work combines direct methods of my wood carving and metal work that can be directly related to castings that I had created 10 years ago. The differece in my work between now and then is the immediate nature of the work which allows for more experimentation, and less time in production.
