Portfolio > Lamentation & Lamination

This series of work was created during the last year. In the beginning of the year my mother initiated contact with her church to show my work. Due to the size of the facility I started working on larger pieces.

I had been carving abstract basswood pieces that are unfinished, and are reminiscent of flesh. However, there are limitations on size when it comes to this material. This is why I initially moved to a different material. I also anticipate the limitless nature of the construction material due to availability, and size.

As the show approached I realized that there are symbolic references to how the pieces were created, and carved. They have come to represent a healing process that I am going through dealing with my mother's death from ALS. Trying to take the wood, make something beautiful and move on.
